Week seven – Broadcast script

1.Inquiry: What are the key differences between writing for broadcast and print-based media?

Summarise key points in Chapter 11 of Media Writing (Whitaker, Ramsey & Smith)

  • writing copy for radio
  • written for the ear
  • catch audience attention when TV or radio is used as background sound
  • must be simpler then print
  • convey the essence of the story in a limited amount of time
  • a script must be written conversationally, a writer was talking to a friend
  • no latitude for wasted words
  • The inverted pyramid concept
  • good broadcast copy should have rhythm and cadence
  • more informal and clarity
  • Sentence has a count on ten
  • as a general rule, keep sentences brief, energetic and simple
  • To avoid words ending with s or th because they generate hissing sounds over the air
  • watch out the words ending with ing; they tend to disrupt the rhythm of sentences
  • think about how you would tell the information to a friend over a cup of coffee: “Hey, did you hear…?”
  • like all good writing, broadcast writing must be clear
  • use strong, declarative subject-verb-object sentences
  • focus on what people decided to do rather than not to do
  • use the active voice
  • starting the sentence with the person or thing that did the action
  • try to avoid past tense. In broadcasting, things are happening now, not last week.

What are the key differences between writing for broadcast and print-based media?

  • A broadcast writer sometimes must tell in 30 seconds a story that a newspaper writer must relate in eight to ten column inches.
  • more informal than print-based copy
  • differs from print writing in that verb tenses can be mixed because radio-TV copy often describes events that are taking place now

2. Practical: Broadcast audio visual script

MANY SCIENTIFIC STUDIES HAVE REVEALED HOW NEGATIVE EMOTIONS HARM THE BODY. ANNIE ALSO HAS THE SAME PERSPECTIVE. SHE BELIEVES THAT MORE HAPPINESS WILL BE MORE HEALTHY.

“Last month, I was feeling upset, but I was recovered after I read the article ‘Being Happy’ written by Pope Francis. His article guides people the way to stay happy. Also, try to be oblivious of unhappy things may help to stay happy too.”

3. Technical: Complete “Quiz 7 – Words” and reflect on this briefly

The topic of chapter nine of English for Journalists is “Words”. I tried to read through it carefully word by word, but I still do not understand all the contents in this chapter, because I do not know much of the vocabulary. I am glad that I can learn many new words and practical vocabulary in this section. As a result, I got seven out of ten at the first attempt.
